Anthology
of Mexican Sones (3CD set)
This
boxed set of 3 CDs, winner of the prestigious Rolex
Award for Enterprise for the producer, Eduardo Llerenas,
has become a classic in Mexico and, more recently in the United
States. Its initial release 20 years ago enabled Mexicans, for the
first time, to hear well-recorded traditional music that thrives
in the different regions of the country but which, unlike the mariachis
and the norteño polkas, has never been commercialised.
Each
region is identified by its own version of son, a country music
that has grown out of the Spanish-indigenous-African fusion and
which offers different blends of fiery violins, guitars, harps and
outstanding voices that still dominate local fiestas and provide
the roots for the Mexican popular music known all around the world.
The
boxed set includes a 36 page bilingual booklet with photos, texts
and lyrics. It has recently been re-packaged with a CD-sized box
and a new cover design. Also available as 3 separate CDs.
"The
Anthology of Mexican Sones is a collection that moves and provokes
the listener in fresh and diverse ways. Some of the older styles
of sones are vanishing but traditional music is more resilient
than many people think." Robert Palmer, New York Times
