Garzón - Escándalo
'Escándalo'
is the third CD by an outstanding Cuban vocalist known as "The
Black Angel with the VelvetVoice". His first release, Boleros,
was critically acclaimed by the U.S. media: "Cuban bolero at its
best," said Elijah Wald in the Boston Globe while the Boston Phoenix
immediately placed Garzon in the ranks of Youssou N'Dour and Milton
Nascimiento.
Boleros was nominated as Best Latin Disc by NAIRD, 1996. For this
CD, Garzón brought together seven of the most outstanding young
musicians from different Santiago bands and together they worked
on arrangements that are really creative and fresh within the
Cuban repertoire that is currently enjoying such enormous international
success.
Garzón puts a very personal stamp on this repertoire, his incredible
voice and the instrumental back-up bringing new life to gems from
the old Cuban trova like Guarina and the more contemporary compositions
like 'Alfonsina y el Mar'. This CD has tremendous soul and spine.
A must for everyone interested in Cuban and Latin American romantic
music, it carefully steers clear of clichés and softness which
can be the pitfall of romantic singers.
