Brukdon of Belice - Shine Eye Gal

Brukdon was born in the mahogany camps of Belize, a style of singing and dancing which - profoundly influenced by calypso - made light of people and events in the forest. As it travelled to the towns, two different styles of brukdon emerged: some bands now emphasize the British roots of the music, others the African.

This CD, recorded in Belize, presents both extremes: the 'whitened' brukdon of the Mini Female Duet and the African-influenced boom and chime orchestras which, with rasping voices and complex percussion, present the same repertoire with a very different flavour.
