Cañambú
- The Rhythm Sticks
The
small town of San Luis, not far from Santiago de Cuba, has produced
some of the greatest singers, including Ibrahim Ferrer.
From this same generation, Arístides Ruiz has the high
pitched voice of a true sonera singer and his style, accompanied
by a very traditional son quintet, provides a unique introduction
to the most traditional son montuno.
In the traditional of the sugarcane-workers from San Luis, this
group makes use of the enormous bamboo canes from the fields around
their homes to construct both the bass and bongos, and these instruments
give a very distinctive style to their repertoire, much of which
is composed by Arístides himself.
