Known
by his friends as Almendrón, Alejandro Enis Almenaris is one of
Santiago de Cuba's last trovadores, the self-taught street musicians
who created the Cuban bolero and son that conquered the world,
first in the 1940s and then again at the end of the Century.
Son of the legendary musician and composer, Angel Almenaris, Almendron
is today considered to be the best composer in Santiago de Cuba
in this old style which has become so famous thanks in part to
three other Santiago musician friends: Compay Segundo, Eliades
Ochoa and Ibrahim Ferrer.
'Mueve la Cintura Mulata' is a classic Almenaris composition which
captures the great sense of humour and sensuality of the streets
of Santiago. It has been chosen for several films, from Hollywood
productions to off-beat documentaries and was included on the
Putumayo CD 'Afro-Latino'.
