Jesús Reyes is the founder of one of the best mariachis from the
South of Jalisco state, where this music was created. His mariachi,
Los Reyes del Aserradero, is made up of 14 musicians, most of
whom are Jesus' sons and nephews.
'El Cihualteco' is a traditional son de Jalisco and is very well
known in Mexico. This arrangement is outstanding, however, because
it a more polished and sophisticated take on the original country
classic without losing the essence, which is what distinguishes
it from versions by mariachis from outside the region. Jesus'
arrangements are well known for the flourishes on the violin and
for the excellent chorus as well as the trumpet that adds the
festive flavour to this genre.
This song has been selected for films and documentaries both in
Mexico and in the U.S. and was recently included in the Disney
animation, 'The Emperor's New Groove.'
