Like
Benny Moré, his voice caresses, like Barbarito Diez he
is refined, exquisite. Like his friend Elena Burke he believes
that the voice is everything. Unlike any other Cuban soloist,
Armando Garzón has a perfectly trained counter-tenor
voice which he uses to interpret the indestructible love songs
of Latin America, the boleros that, like Garzón himself,
were born in Santiago, musical capital of Cuba.
Boleros
his
debut CD, received major critical acclaim and opened the way
for the emergence of a great Cuban star.
For Danzón,
his second CD, Armando Garzón surprised everyone in Santiago
de Cuba by joining forces with one of the port's hottest son
bands, Los Guanches, to record a repertoire of the old boleros,
arranged to the danzón rhythm but played on guitars,
bongos, bass and güiro scraper, the instruments of Cuban
country son. The result is proof of the enormous creativity
and spirit of Cuban musicians.
His third CD, Escándalo,
is an outstanding presentation of Cuban classics from the original
trova to nueva canción. The arrangement are rooted in
the 50's but with Armando's creative touch that makes them entirely
contemporary.
Baptized by the Mexican press as 'The Black Angel with the Velvet
Voice', Armando is considered to be the greatest solo singer
in Santiago, both for classical as well as popular music because
of his exceptional voice of a counter-tenor. He was 'discovered'
by Pablo Milanés who made a record with him in the late
80s. Armando has toured Mexico seven times and also played in
Europe.
