The
line-up presents the style of the Cuban sonero septets although
in this case there are three lead vocalists who bring the total
to nine musicians. What is special about this group is the apparent
ease with which the old musicians play the son and bolero, offering
a calm intensity and a quiet passion that is difficult for younger
bands to imitate.
Los Jubilados' line-up includes the tres guitar for improvised
solos and the Spanish guitar for the rhythm section; double
bass, bongos and conga, vocals with hand percussion and trumpet.
Current members of Los Jubilados who didn't play with Bebeto
and Mario in the Conjunto Cubanero know them both from long
nights of serenades and informal parties in the house of one
or another of the musicians, very much in the tradition of the
original Cuban trova. Several were professional musicians who
played, at one time or another with the competition: with Mario
Patterson's orchestra, with the legendary Orquesta Chepín-Choven
or with the Conjunto de Hilario Wilson, which accompanied Celia
Cruz when she visited Santiago. Others were talented part-timers
- a carpenter, a chauffer a slaughter - house worker.
