Biography - La Negra Graciana

One of the interesting things about son jarocho is that, considering these are string bands, this is one of the most percussive styles of Mexican traditional music. The complex rhythms and counter-rhythms played on guitars are highlighted and answered by the zapateado foot-stamp dancing of the crowd. In the Indigenous/Spanish/African blend that makes up all mestizo music in México, this is one of the styles that shows the most direct African influence.

Another important element of this music is the way that improvised verses are included alongside traditional lyrics. Graciana is famous for her improvised verses which show her great sense of humour. Providing she likes the audience, she is likely to dedicated a few lines composed on the spot. Since the release of her first CD, 'Sones jarochos',

Graciana has been invited to perform on some of the world's most important stages including the Theatre de la Ville in Paris, the Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Centre in London and the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Her most recent Paris concert was recorded live and resulted in her second CD, ' La Negra Graciana en vivo..' produced in Mexico by Discos Corason.
